Chilean Blue Opal is a common opal found in the arid copper-rich regions of northern Chile. Its striking blue to blue-green colours are thought to be linked to copper-bearing minerals present during formation.
Because it often occurs alongside minerals such as chrysocolla, shattuckite and other secondary copper minerals, distinguishing them can sometimes be challenging. In general, blue opal tends to be more compact, smoother and less porous than these copper minerals, reflecting its silica-rich composition.
Origin: Atacama Desert, Chile
Weight: 20.3 grams
Measurements:40×25×18 mm
Note: it is a rough stabilised chip.
