Crystals that Can and Can't Go Under Water

If you are into energetic work with crystals, I'm sure you have heard that we should regularly cleanse our crystals with water and salt... But you must know that this cleansing method only works for some stones!

Many stones shouldn't go in water because their molecular structure is soft or porous; they could dissolve or lose their color, luster, shape, etc. So, they need to be cleansed using other methods. As you may have read in an older post on this blog, there are different ways we can restore a crystal's original energy, not necessarily with water. But if you are planning to use water, you must remember that all stones that are under 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness should not be cleansed with water. You may wet them for a short time (for example, to remove any dust), but never for long periods of time. So, it is important that you find out the hardness of the crystal before choosing your cleansing method.

Here is a list of stones that can—and cannot—be submerged for extended periods.

In our experience, they can all be held under running water for a few seconds without any issues. If they are very dirty, you can use a toothbrush to clean them gently.

Just to clarify: when we mention "Quartz," we are referring to the entire family—Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Aventurine, Amethyst, Blue Quartz, Red Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Rutilated Quartz, as well as Agate, Jasper, Tiger's Eye, Chalcedony, Bloodstone, etc. The entire Quartz family is safe to put in water. The same applies to Tourmalines, Beryls, and Obsidians; all colors are safe to put in water.
